About Liposuction Surgery

Preparing For Liposuction Surgery

Illustration of abdominal and thigh liposuction planning

Many women benefit from sculpting the abdomen and “saddlebags” with liposuction. Dr. Connall uses the gentle Body-Jet liposuction system to treat these areas.

Your preparation for liposuction surgery begins with your initial consultation with Dr. Connall at Connall Cosmetic Surgery in Tualatin, OR.  At that time, we will provide you with thorough information about your condition and treatment options so that you can make an informed decision about liposuction surgery.

Once you have elected to proceed with liposuction, our entire team will begin the process of preparing you for surgery.  This preparation will include a comprehensive preoperative consultation a few weeks before the surgery. We will ask you to stop taking certain medications, especially those that affect bleeding and anesthesia.

Ideally, you should quit cigarette smoking before undergoing liposuction surgery.  However, the risk in terms of wound healing complications is not as great with liposuction surgery as they are with many other procedures.

Therefore, we will not require you to stop smoking before surgery, but we certainly will strongly recommend it.  Your preparation for surgery should include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, diet, and enthusiasm for the procedure.

Anesthesia For Liposuction

Liposuction can be performed with numbing medicine, oral sedation and numbing medicine, IV sedation and numbing medicine, and general anesthesia.

The choice in anesthetic techniques is determined based on the areas for liposuction and the patient’s personal wishes.  Since Connall Cosmetic Surgery has been using the Body-Jet liposuction, we have found that many more patients are able to undergo the procedure with local anesthesia and oral or IV sedation.  The most appropriate anesthetic technique will be discussed during your consultation and preoperative appointments with Dr. Connall.

Recovery From Liposuction Surgery

The liposuction surgery will be performed at the Meridian Center for Surgical Excellence.  Our entire surgery center team has great experience in caring for Body-Jet liposuction patients.  You will be fully awake immediately after surgery.  Soon after you will be able to drink water and have a light snack.  Your recovery in the Meridian Center will take about one hour.  Most Body-Jet liposuction patients are able to go home immediately after discharge from the Meridian Center.  However, if you desire assistance with your first night of recovery, you may be transferred to the rest and recovery unit at Legacy Meridian Park Hospital.

Expect to take off about three to five days from work and home activities after liposuction surgery.  The areas of liposuction will be tender and sore.  You will need to take narcotic pain medicine for at least the first few days after surgery.  After three to five days you will feel well and start to resume normal home activities.  You will be able to resume exercise as tolerated two or three weeks after surgery and you will be able to resume full unlimited activity six weeks after surgery.  Though you will immediately see the improvements made by liposuction, the tissues will have significant swelling for several weeks.  Indeed, due to swelling, it will take at least two to three months before you can see your new figure and a full six months after surgery required before the final results of your new body can be assessed.
